Helpful Equipment To Make Your Grilled Steak and Potatoes

These tools will help make this recipe even easier!

Recipe Ingredients

  • 360 grams Flank steak
  • 340 grams Pre-cooked garlic mashed potatoes (or make your own fresh)
  • 140 grams Frozen chopped spinach
  • ½ tsp. Dried rosemary, crushed
  • ½ tsp. Minced Garlic
  • 1 tbsp. Olive oil

How To Make Grilled Steak and Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Begin by preparing your grill or grill pan by turning on the heat to medium-high. When the time comes to cook your steak, you’ll want your grill to be very hot.

In a small bowl, mix together the oil, rosemary, and garlic powder. Apply to the meat with a basting brush or spoon. Then, sprinkle the salt and pepper over the steak and massage the marinade gently into the meat with your hands.

Place the meat on the preheated grill and cook for 6-7 minutes on each side, or until the meat is cooked to your desired doneness.

Meanwhile, place the pre-cooked garlic mashed potatoes and thawed, chopped spinach in a large, microwaveable dish. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave in 45 second bursts until hot, stirring often. Add salt and pepper to the potatoes as desired.

Allow the cooked meat to rest on a cutting board for 10-15 minutes, tented with foil to keep it hot. Then, cut the meat into slices.

Serve on a platter with the bowl of mashed potatoes.

To Make Fresh Garlic Mashed Potatoes:

For 4-6 servings of garlic mashed, start by peeling about 2 lbs of white potatoes. Chop into 1 ½ inch pieces and boil until fork-tender.

Drain and place the potatoes back in the pot.

Next, warm up ⅓-½ cup cream or half and half in the microwave. You can also use milk for a less rich flavor. Add about 3 tbsp of butter and warm cream to the potatoes, along with the equivalent of 3-4 cloves of roasted garlic. You can adjust to your taste, or use minced instead.

Use a hand mixer to beat the potatoes until smooth, but be careful not to overmix! The potatoes will get starchy and sticky. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve hot.

To Make Fresh Garlic Steak Butter

Add 1-2 tbsp of unsalted butter to a small saucepan, then season with 3-4 cloves of roasted or minced garlic and a few tsp of garlic powder. Add a few shakes of salt and allow the mixture to get nice and hot in the saucepan. Stir and don’t let the mixture burn. Finally, add 6 more tbsp of butter and mix everything together until melted and combined. Serve in a bowl, or give everyone their own for dipping.

Prep Time

If you’re using pre-cooked mashed potatoes, this meal will only take about 5 minutes to prep! If you’re making your potatoes from scratch, leave approximately 25 minutes to prep.

How to Grill the Perfect Steak

Ever wonder how some people just know how to make the perfect grilled steak? There are a few simple rules to follow to get that perfect sear and flavor.

  • Make sure your steak is at room temperature before cooking. Leave covered on the counter for an hour before cooking – but not longer.
  • Marinate your steak, especially if you bought a cheaper cut, or if your steaks don’t have much fat marbling. Place them in the fridge covered in marinade for at least 2 hours, but 6 hours to 2 days is best.
  • Pat the steak dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture before adding your seasonings.
  • Season the steak generously with salt and pepper. Some people feel this is the only seasoning a good steak needs!
  • Place your steak on a very hot grill to sear the outside. This traps in the juices to your steak stays perfectly moist. Then, reduce the heat to finish cooking.
  • Always allow your steak to rest for 10-15 minutes before cutting into it. This allows the juices to redistribute and ensures a juicy, tender steak. If you cut too soon, all the juices will run out and your steak will be tougher to bite.

Steak Grilling Temperature Guide

Ingredient Substitutions

Flank Steak – This is a great cut because it cooks fast, but you can substitute any cut you prefer

Spinach – You can omit the spinach if you prefer, or, you can add in other sneaky veggies, like cooked carrots or cauliflower and mix them in with a hand mixer

Rosemary – Substitute steak seasoning, or omit and just use garlic, salt, and pepper.

Tips & Tricks and Recipe Notes

  • You can use the same oil and spice mixture to marinade your steaks if you prefer. Place everything in a large Ziploc bag and keep it in the refrigerator for 6 hours to 2 days.
  • Don’t over-boil your potatoes or they will become mushy and starchy. Remove from the heat when fork-tender.
  • To prevent the steak from sticking to the grill, make sure the grill grates are clean and oiled.
  • Create pretty cross-hatching marks by turning your steaks ¼ turn only once on each side while cooking.
  • Resist the urge to push down on your steaks as they cook. This releases the juices and makes your meat drier.
  • Grate some cheese into your mashed potatoes for a different flavor. Cheddar is a great choice!

How to Store

Storing Leftover Steak: You can keep your leftover steak in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. To keep the steak juicy and flavorful, wrap it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap, then place in a container.

Reheating Leftover Steak: The best way I’ve found to reheat steak is in the oven. This really helps the steak retain its texture and flavor. First, preheat the oven to 350°F. Make sure your steak is wrapped in foil and put it on a baking tray. In 10-15 minutes, your steak should be heated through.

You can also use a pan on the stove, but you can easily dry out your steak. If you use this method, keep the temperature no higher than medium and flip the steak often while you’re reheating.
