All About Oat Milk

The plant-based, vegan milk category has grown tremendously over the past number of years. While almond, soy, and rice milk were pretty much the only products available for quite some time, oat milk was a welcome addition.

Slightly creamier and smoother in texture than its nondairy counterparts, oat milk has become increasingly popular as a vegan milk substitute. You can find oat milk at most coffee shops and grocery stores these days.

Oat milk is also a great alternative for those with nut allergies who can’t drink almond or cashew milk.

This gluten-free, homemade oat milk is easy to prepare and makes up a great cappuccino, cafe au lait or matcha latte. It also tastes great in cooking or baking or over your favorite bowl of cereal.

Variations of Oat Milk

  • Substitute a touch of honey or maple syrup instead of the dates.
  • Mix in a few tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder for chocolate oat milk.
  • Throw in some strawberries or raspberries for berry-flavored oat milk.
  • Omit the dates if you want more of a unsweetened oat milk to cook with. Or make the batch half sweetened, half unsweetened.
  • Add a teaspoon or two of espresso powder for coffee-flavored oat milk or mix in some chai spices for chai oat milk.

Tips and Tricks/Notes

  • Make sure to buy old-fashioned oats and not instant, quick cook, or steel cut as these oats won’t blend up as well.
  • If you follow a gluten-free diet make sure the package of oats says gluten-free oats. Though oats are naturally gluten-free many oats are processed in facilities where gluten is processed thus creating a potential cross-contamination issue. Oats labeled as gluten-free do not run this risk.
  • If you can’t find Medjool dates you can substitute a different type of date. Note Medjool dates are quite large so you may need to add a few more if you are using a smaller date.
