How To Make This Red Velvet Cookie Recipe

Combine your dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl; flour, sugar, cocoa, and baking powder.

In another bowl mix the egg, milk, and food dye and blend using an electric or handheld blender or a whisk.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and then pour in the room-temperature butter.

Mix everything thoroughly to combine, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place the bowl in the refrigerator for 2 hours.

After 2 hours remove the bowl from the fridge and roll small balls out of the dough. Use your hands or a one-tablespoon measure to scoop out the dough. Roll the balls in the powdered sugar and place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake in an oven that has been preheated to 370°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes or until done.

All About Red Velvet

Red Velvet has become synonymous with a red dessert such as red velvet cake, red velvet cupcakes. There is some controversy as to how it was developed and some theorize that the red appearance originally came from the type of cocoa powder that was used. Other theories tell us that beets were used to get the red hue. However, today people usually add liquid food coloring to get this effect in their cookies, cakes, and muffins.

Variations

  • To add texture to the cookies you can add chocolate chips; semi-sweet, white or dark chocolate will all work well.  Another option is toasted, chopped nuts will also add a nice crunch and flavor.
  • Instead of rolling the dough in powdered sugar, you can dip the baked cookies in melted chocolate for a chocolate-covered red velvet cookie.

Tips and Tricks/Notes

  • Make sure your dry ingredients don’t have any lumps. You can always sift them together as this ensures there are no lumps.
  • Bring the egg, milk, and butter to room temperature before you start to assemble the cookies as they will be easier to work with.
  • Any kind of milk will work; skim, full-fat or plant-based. If you do use a plant-based option choose unsweetened as there is no need to add more sugar to the cookies.
  • Don’t compromise on the fridge time as the dough needs to sit and the butter needs time to solidify.
  • To get an even deeper red color use a red food gel.

How To Store This Recipe For Red Velvet Cookies

Red Velvet cookies can be kept in an airtight container on the kitchen counter for a few days. If you aren’t going to eat them within 3-4 days it is probably best to freeze them to preserve their freshness. They can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.  Make sure to store them so you can easily just grab one (or two!) at a time.
