Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 and 1/2 cups of All Purpose Flour
  • 3 tablespoons of White Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of Salt
  • 30 grams of Vegan Butter
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of Vegan Buttermilk (Make it by mixing lemon juice + soy milk)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a mixing dish, combine all-purpose flour, white granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt. Whisk the ingredients together.
  3. When the flour is crumbly, add vegan butter and stir it in with your fingertips.
  4. To make your vegan buttermilk, combine 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of lemon juice with 1 and 1/2 cups (360 ml) of soy milk in a measuring jug. Allow it to curdle into buttermilk for a minute.
  5. When the dry ingredients in your mixing ingredients will begin to stick together and create a lumpy dough, add the buttermilk and stir it in with a spoon.
  6. Pour the lumpy dough and any flour bits that didn’t mix in properly onto a surface that has been floured, and then use your hands to shape the dough into a ball.
  7. Flatten the dough piece by piece into a smooth, circular disc. It’s okay if it’s still a little untidy. It’s crucial that you only knead the dough 8–10 times at most during this shaping process.
  8. Place the round, flat piece of dough onto a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Cut a deep X into the dough’s top with a pointed knife.
  9. Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown.
