Helpful Equipment for Vegan Biscuits

Ingredients To Make Homemade Vegan Biscuits

  • 3 cups (375g) All Purpose Flour (plus more for dusting)
  • 1 Tbsp White Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup (112g) Vegan Butter (Cold)
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) Soy Milk (Cold), plus a little more for brushing over the tops of the biscuits
  • 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

How To Make Vegan Biscuits

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).

Combine all-purpose flour, white sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl and mix together.

Using your hands, add the vegan butter and mix with your fingers until the dough is crumbly.

Pour the soy milk, lemon juice, and vanilla into the mixing bowl and mix all the ingredients into a dough.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface or countertop. Lightly dust your hands with flour and flatten the dough. If the dough is too sticky, add a touch more flour. Coat a round cookie cutter with flour and then use it to cut out 4 biscuits.

Roll the dough out once more and flatten again with your hands cut out 2 more biscuits and repeat the process again until you get a total of 8 biscuits. You may end up with 9 but not to worry the recipe will still work.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the biscuits on it. Lightly brush the tops of the biscuits with soy milk and bake them in the oven for 15 minutes or until they become golden brown on top.

Allow the biscuits to cool for a few minutes before serving them.

All About Vegan Biscuits

Biscuits are a white flour-based baked good traditionally made with dairy butter. Biscuits can be prepared with a savory flavor using herbs and cheese or with a sweet flavor with sugar or icing.

These vegan biscuits are made using vegan butter and vegan buttermilk and can be adapted to either a savory or sweet flavor profile depending on your preference.

Think of these biscuits like a blank slate that you modify to suit whatever the occasion is.

Variations of this Dairy-Free Vegan Biscuit Recipe

  • For extra flavor, you can add chopped fresh garlic and sprinkle some vegan cheese on the top of the biscuits before you bake them.
  • Add diced green onions, chives, or fresh rosemary to the biscuit batter for savory biscuits.
  • Throw in raisins, currents, or cranberries along with a teaspoon of cinnamon for some sweet biscuits.

Tips and Tricks/Notes

It is important to measure the flour accurately. If you are using measuring cups the best way to measure the flour is with the spoon and level method. Scoop the flour into the measuring cup and use a knife to level it off.

Try not to scoop the flour or pack it into the cup. Another method is to use a food scale to weigh the flour which will give you the most accurate results.

If you prefer not to use the white sugar, you can leave it out of this recipe. Though the sugar doesn’t make these egg-free biscuits particularly sweet so don’t worry if you think they’ll be sweet-tasting.

Note the biscuits do require 2 tablespoons of baking powder to make them rise and get really fluffy.

You can substitute a different non-dairy milk like oat milk or almond milk if you are looking for a soy-free option however we have only tested this recipe using soy milk.

If you want to make these biscuits gluten-free you can try substituting a 1-1 gluten-free flour. Note I have not made these gluten-free so I can not say how they will turn out.

Make sure to use the butter straight from the fridge so it is nice and cold.

How To Store These Easy Vegan Biscuits

Like most baked goods these vegan biscuits will taste the best the day you bake them. However, if you do have leftovers you can wrap them well to prevent them from drying out or place them in an airtight container and keep them on the kitchen counter for a few days.

You can also throw them in the freezer for up to 3 months.

  7. Put the biscuits on a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper and lightly brush the tops with soy milk.
  8. Put in the oven and bake for 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  9. Serve them after allowing them to cool for a while.
